Tewet Tarn & Derwent Water Workshop - Price £95 (Max 3 people)

As part of the day we will aim to visit as many of the locations listed below as possible but which ones will depend on the weather, ground conditions and the time of year. I like to keep the workshop sizes small with a maximum of three participants, this will enable you to get the maximum enjoyment out of them. The start time will vary throughout the year with the aim of starting just before sunrise and the day will last for around 8 hours.

 

On the workshop the emphasis will be on informal tuition looking at: Camera settings, the use of ND filters, how to improve the image with simple compositional tweaks, how to add impact and the use of long exposure techniques.

The walking on this workshop in the main will be on reasonably level ground with the possibility of a couple of inclines, the surfaces will be uneven and walking boots are required. If you have wellington boots please bring these especially in the winter months.

Tewet Tarn

Throughout the day you could easily walk past this small body of water without a second glance but in the morning light it becomes a hidden gem of a photography location. Looking north towards Blencathra and Skiddaw there are some fantastic uninterrupted views from Tewet Tarn and a great place to capture a sunrise at any time of year.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Roughly a mile away from Tewet as the crow fly's is this prehistoric monument which is approximately 5000 years old and contains between 38 & 42 stones depending on who's counting. From here you have 360 degree views taking in Blencathra, Skidddaw and Helvellyn. A great place for sunrise/sunset and long exposures throughout the day. It's a popular place with both tourists and photographers so don't expect to be alone here.

Isthmus Bay

A small bay at the northern end of Derwent Water just outside of Keswick, that has some great views towards Catbells and the surrounding fells. With the right water levels and a calm lake this is great location for photography and over the last year has become one of my favourite locations.

Crow Park

Another location just outside of Keswick with great views down Derwent Water and with the added attraction of a gate in the water when the lake levels are high. A good place here to capture that Autumn/Winter sunrise or just wait for the first of the days light hitting Catbells behind Derwent Isle.

Strandshag Bay

Drop down from Friars Crag to this bay overlooking Lord's Island where there's a few different options with views towards Catbells across the lake. Whether you use the fence line under Friars Crag, even a piece of driftwood on the shore, or maybe when the water levels are just so add yourself into the image, there's plenty to look at along this part of Derwent Water.

Ashness Gate Jetty

Probably the most photographed and photogenic Jetty in the Lake District with views westward towards Catbells. A great subject for both sunrise and sunset and on those windy days a long exposure works well here also. It's always worth shooting across the jetty towards Bassenthwaite Lake especially when there's some nice light about.

Above are mentioned a few of the possibilities of places that we may visit throughout the workshop, there are so many opportunities around this area for photography.

What you need to bring with you on the day:

 

Appropriate clothing, walking boots, wellingtons (if you have them), waterproofs, hat & gloves.

DSLR, tripod, filters & holder (if you don't have filters or a holder there may be a possibility that I have something that you can loan for the day).

Lenses, memory cards, spare battery.

Packed lunch, snacks & warm drinks.

Don't forget to charge up your camera batteries prior to the day.
